Following a bequest by a Member of the Club, the late Sir Michael Cobham, the Royal Southern Yacht Club Trust was set up with the aim of enabling and encouraging sailing activities for all. The principle means of achieving this is to provide grants to individuals and organisations where the need has been demonstrated.

The Trustees meet twice a year to determine which grant applications to support. In the past year grants have been awarded to organisations including the Hamble Sea Scouts, the Southampton and the Warsash Sea Cadets, YMCA Fairthorne Manor and Fairbridge Solent.

Amongst individuals who have received grants are young people aiming for national and international championships via RYA schemes, and others starting sailing through training courses and on Tall Ships.

Amongst disabled people who have received a grant is Geoff Holt. Geoff completed his ‘personal Atlantic’ when he sailed from the Canaries to the Caribbean demonstrating that disability need not be a barrier to achieving something positive in life.

The Trustees are delighted at the sailing successes of many of those who have received grants.
