Ruby Callaghan – RS Feva World Championships 2023

The RS Feva World Championships took place in Follonica, Italy at the end of July and was my first overseas event. It turned out to be the largest RS Feva Worlds ever with 211 boats and 422 competitors from lots of different countries, some of which were Czech, Netherlands, Denmark, Italy, New Zealand, and 40 boats from Great Britain. This made the opening ceremony very exciting as I was seeing for the first tome how big the Feva class was
and getting to meet a few of the foreign competitors.

The first two days were a qualifying series and, even though we were expecting very light wind conditions it was in fact very windy, which made the sailing quite tough for me as I do best in light winds. My crew and I qualified in bronze fleet, and when the wind eventually died down, we were happy to achieve some results in the top 5.

Overall, it was a brilliant experience which allowed me to meet lots of different people and has inspired me to go to more overseas events in the future if I can. I am extremely grateful to the Royal Southern trust for helping with the expense of this event and would like to also thank all the trustees.
